Artistic journey of Léo Lérus
Léo Lérus' first school was that of the choreographer and teacher Léna Blou. There he discovered traditional Gwo-ka dance and contemporary and classical dances.
Following the advice of his teacher, Léo joined the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) at the age of 14 in order to continue his training as a contemporary dancer.
Upon leaving the conservatory in 1999, he began his professional career as a performer. He dances with various companies in England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Israel, including the Random Dance Company (Wayne McGregor), the Batsheva Dance Company (Ohad Naharin) and the L-E-V Dance Company (Sharon Eyal/Gai Behar).
About the Company
Intimately linked to his artistic and personal journey, Léo Lérus (born in 1980 in Les Abymes), dancer and choreographer, founded the Zimarèl company in 2011 in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe, the archipelago where he is from.
Zimarèl is in fact the story of a return to a native land and culture, where reminiscences of GwoKa and Léwoz appear consciously in a singular contemporary choreographic writing; the founding dance is enriched by the dances encountered and having marked out an exceptional journey, thus showing a sensitive and open contemporary Guadeloupean signature, in perpetual experimentation and exploration.
